Summer Treat in Goa

If you are a workaholic like me, then most of the days you just push through with the thought that soon you could take a bigger break and go on a mini vacation some place. My little sister came to visit me for a couple of weeks for the summer. To see her after  three long years was a real treat, we decided to head to Goa. We had been there together once a few years ago. Just mention the name and all you can think of is the sea, sun and sand in between your toes. Just laze, soak up the sun and relish on delicious sea food and drink the local favorite chilled King’s beer.

There are plenty of flights to chose from Bangalore to Goa, we opted for Air Asia. The early morning flights can be a bit chaotic in Bangalore as it looks like every flight to every city in India departs around 6am or so. So a tip, do not assume you can just walk in an hour prior to departure. Make sure you give yourself atleast 2 hours time to get there and check in.

We decided to stay at the Hyatt Palace, Candolim in Goa. It was a real delight to have spend the nights there, their beds are so cozy as stated on their website, true to their word. Best sleep ever, and we just did not want to get out of it. However, just 3 days, so we had to force ourselves to stick to early rise, so we could set out to the beach destinations. The beaches are about an hour or so drive apart. I liked the buffet breakfast at the Hyatt Place, and have to admit it was up to mark when it came to the variety to suit everyone’s palette.

We ended up at three different beaches, one each a day that we were there – Candolim, Ashwem and Palolem. Your best bet if in Goa is either to rent a scooter and or a car or open top jeep. Hailing a cab/Taxi or an auto-rickshaw is expensive and not worth it. We went a little bonkers and opted for an open top jeep. It was the best decision of all.

I love to capture the spur of the moment, and so does my little sister, being Instagram addicts we went mental with our androids and selfie sticks. The summer heat was not as bad as we had expected. The cool breeze was a solace.

March is almost close of the travel season, as Goa gets too hot during April, and then June the monsoons set in until end of September. So best time to visit is November to March. With December and January being the peak. Each of the beaches we visited were especially quiet which is just what the doctor ordered. This just added to the charm of Goa. Lazy days, lazing on the sun beds. Occasionally just running into the sea and enjoying getting trashed by the waves. I just floated and let time drift by without a cares in the world. To catch the sunset, sipping on Pinacolada’s is what dreams are made of.

Driving past the winding roads, Goa has not lost its charm especially old goa, the palm trees, the beautiful well laid out and colorful tiled houses.

As planned and expected we just ate lots of seafood.  There are plenty of shacks along the coast which serve up some amazing and delicious food. The menu features Goan cuisine with an emphasis on seafood, and other locally-sourced delicacies and meat. We just stuck to Prawns, Calamari and catch of the day. Boy oh Boy, I am reminiscing about the Rechado (local paste used to marinate the seafood) as I am writing this blog post.

Beer is the favorite drink and goes with any meal and any point of the day. King’s is the locally brewed beer and top seller, along with KingFisher. Just take your pick. To beat the heat, and stay hydrated, best to stick to fruit juices which are fresh or tender coconut water.

On the last day, at Palolem, we decided to take the boat ride to the butterfly island and honeymoon beach. 30mins each way and we spent about another 30 at the Honeymoon Beach, just swimming. Highly recommend this to anyone travelling to Palolem. For those who wish to spot dolphins, suggest you take the boat trip earlier during the day. We took ours close to sunset, so failed to spot any!

There are a lot of arts and crafts stores along the way, missed packing your essentials like sun cream or bathing suit? The stores around the city have it all.

As for the night life, we were really exhausted from all that swimming and traveling, to & from the beaches, that we opted to just step outside the Hyatt Place, around the streets in Candolim, to gorge on some delicious meal for a dinner and an evening stroll.

Inferno in Candolim, is highly recommended, and is also featured as one of the best restaurants in Candolim, link attached. J ust the ambiance was inviting, especially with the summer heat, the out door seating is perfect, at night with the cool sea breeze.(it does get a bit nippy in the air at night). Sizzlers were the hot pick for the customers that night as we just had our table surrounded by the hot sizzlers sizzling. Whilst placing the order they explain the preparation. I loved their Goan sausage rice and the fish curry rice. (The lighting was too dim for good pictures and I had left my camera at the hotel).

Later the following night we tried out Sol de Goa. This is close to the LPK waterfront in Nerul. I just loved the architecture and the interiors. Very chic and rustic feel at the same time, the entry opens up to a courtyard with a pool. There is a main pool inside the restaurant as well. Those seeking solace, can pick any of the gorgeous suites to stay the night, or so I was told by the owner of the resort himself. They have live bands performing almost every other night. My sister and I, being true Mangaloreans, danced to the tunes of the baila and some retro 80’s tunes. As we were busy dancing we just stuck to sipping some chilled chardonnay and chose the classic margaritas to munch on.

Overall, we got tanned and a week on, and I still look like, I live by the sea side. Cannot wait to get back there soon. To follow either my lovely sister and I on our crazy adventures in two countries – worlds apart, here are our Instagram handles – @indiangirlinpoland and @skinnygirldiariez

Check out the gallery below, again we just stuck to basic pics as were were to busy floating away in the water.  Until then stay safe and leave your comments below. Would love to hear about your trip!
