Sula Vineyards has established itself and made a mark in the Indian wine industry. As a pioneer and an innovator with milestones across its winemaking, tourism and business ventures. The launch of their latest and first premium wine offering is Kādu, (pronounced Kaa-du) meaning “wild” in Kannada (regional language of Karnataka) – is India’s first “Wine for a Cause” from Sula’s Karnataka vineyards.
Kādu was launched by Rajeev Samant, Founder and CEO, Sula Vineyards Bengaluru at the Taj West End. It was a delight to attend the launch, like always Sula went all out to wow its guests, and the four varietals from Kādu – two whites, a rose and a red, kept flowing through the night. There were some stunning pieces of art work on display for purchase as well.
I managed to get a 60sec soundbite, on what inspired and gave rise to Kādu
Kādu, The beautiful label, handiwork of renowned label designer Simon Frouws, depicts a tiger in all its glory in the wild jungle. The facility is located in Bidar, Karnataka, with root stocks being imported to grow these varieties.
Karnataka is home to the majestic beast, and is India’s national animal. It falls under the endangered list, as its habitat is under threat. Did you know – Out of 38,720 km of forests in Karnataka, 20% is dedicated to support and conserve tiger population.
It is a brilliant initiative that Sula has undertaken. With each bottle sold, Kādu will contribute towards tiger conservation in Karnataka, and promote Wine Tourism along the lines. In a bid to mark the grand occasion, Rajeev presented the first Kādu cheque to Bittu Sahgal, Founder Sanctuary Nature Foundation.
My personal pick has to be Kādu Cabernet Shiraz, a medium bodied wine with hints of pepper and dark chocolate, along with subtle oak. I also liked the Shiraz Rosè if it was an afternoon affair, as it was quite on the light and fruity side.
Here are some images from the launch that evening –
