Churalis Review: A Female Justice League That Hits Patriarchy on ZEE5

The 3 C’s of Life: Choices, Chances, Changes – You must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change. I am at awe at this 10-episode feminist vigilante series, which is making a splash across screens around the world. It was released on ZEE5 on 11 August 2020.

‘Churail’ according to folklore, colloquially means a witch or evil one in SouthEast Asia. It’s a slang used as an abusive word for women.

WHAT IS THE SERIES ABOUT?

The latest hit series, it’s about 4 Pakistani women who bond over a common backstory and join forces to form a detective agency with the help of a boutique selling burqas to teach unfaithful men of Pakistan a lesson. Written and directed by Asim Abbasi, we have a definite winner, as this series expresses the desire and compulsion of women, and sets out a new standard towards women empowerment. Progressive storytelling and no stereotyping. #MainChurailHoon

This series is set in Karachi, Pakistan, and follows the lives. of four women: Sara (Sarwat Gilani Mirza) as a lawyer turned housewife, Jugnu (Yasra Rizvi) a popular wedding planner, Batool (Nimra Bucha) who had been sentenced to 20 years in jail for her husband’s murder and Zubaida (Mehar Bano) a boxer. These women have a boutique selling burqas.

This series throws some hard-hitting facts about our society at present. And is need of the hour to start a long-standing dialogue. It questions the loyalty of men, it’s not a male-bashing series but highlights the facts about infidelity, and other violence women face. Furthermore, this series talks about sensitive topics and depicts LGBT characters as well. IT showcases the entire spectrum of sexuality.

Churails is a well-conceived drama. There is a balanced element of comedy and action that makes it a binge-worthy ( marathon) viewing of ten episodes.

FABULOUS FEMINISM

In Churails, every character leaves a mark. A fine line between gender wars. Well written, a bit melodramatic, and a bit of an overkill with metaphors about men being the stronger sex out of the two. Each of the episodes is about an hour long. The flashbacks are bathed in a high contract and the sequences are set in a slick manner. These women are in a way special and definitely not witches, a set of female vigilantes if you will. Not only do they cast a spell, but they also build a bridge.

VERDICT

Overall, a good watch, with some fabulous acting by the lead stars that keep you glued. I shall give credit to Asim Abbasi for some creative writing and his directing. Each of the lead stars has portraited their characters brilliantly, and are now my favorite stars. I do hope there will be more to come and look forward to the series.

The entire SHOW and its EPISODES are streaming on ZEE5, so go ahead and binge-watch, your weekend. I promise it will be worth it!

I would describe myself as someone who loves to eat good food and travel, am polished and classy, yet have that little girl spirit in me and my fashion sense is chic which has to be accompanied with bold statement pieces and fresh accessories. I love to get pampered, totally spoil myself, and why not? xoxo Deena Pinto #skinnygirldiairez
